In a makersystem, local makerspaces network together to offer specialized capabilities to a larger community.

For Students

We are working hard to make sure MIT students have access to the tools, spaces and information they need to make, create and innovate.

Our Story

our-story

We work with universities to build better makerspaces that empower students around the world to be innovative thinkers and makers.

Several years ago, MIT did an assessment and revitalization of its makerspaces. Through this process, the university worked with faculty, staff, and students to create and define the next generation of makerspaces that empower entrepreneurship.

It took time to get it right, but it was transformative. It was necessary to ensure that students had what they needed to be successful, and that the Institute was supporting them, with the right resources.

After going through that process, MIT created the Make Impact Consortium to help other universities create and grow vibrant makerspaces and entrepreneurship ecosystems. We realized that by sharing best practices, through coordinated and collaborative learning, we would accelerate and amplify impact.

Through the Make Impact Consortium, we continue to innovate and update makerspaces, processes, and learning to best support the needs of student makers, on campuses around the world.

Our seminars, workshops, design challenges, and implementation consultations help universities equip their students with the resources they need to design, innovate, and create.

At the same time, our collaborations with industry partners, foundations, nonprofits, and other organizations and individuals allow students to take what they are learning and making and apply that to address real-world problems.

As we foster student makers and innovators, we make more impact, together.
