Making at MIT

In a makersystem, local makerspaces network together to offer specialized capabilities to a larger community.

For Students

We are working hard to make sure MIT students have access to the tools, spaces and information they need to make, create and innovate.

Mobius

Mobius connects students, faculty and researchers with nearby resources they can use to make, measure and innovate.

Paying for Things

Paying on Mobius

Students can pay for materials and machine time directly through their TechCash account or with a credit card. Students paying through their TechCash account can use MakerBucks earned through MakerLodge Training as well.

Pay for Materials in Mobius

MakerBucks

MakerBucks may be used to purchase materials, components, and to pay for machine time. MakerBucks may only be spent within MIT makerspaces via the Mobius web app.

Where students can spend their MakerBucks:

  • Stock materials such as aluminum and acrylic in MakerWorkshop
  • Machine time such as the abrasive waterjet in the Hobby Shop and MakerWorkshop
  • 3D printing at the Hobby Shop, MakerWorkshop and the 3D Printing Service in CopyTech

How MakerBucks work

MakerBucks are a special pool of TechCash in your account. If you are paying from the Mobius app, your MakerBucks balance will be added to your TechCash balance, and payments will be taken out of your MakerBucks balance before they are taken from  your regular TechCash balance.

Regular TechCash

If you are signed up for TechCash, you can also spend your regular TechCash balance on materials, components, and machine time. Payments work the same as MakerBucks payments, you just select TechCash as your preferred payment method, and submit your payment. The MIT TechCash system will email you a receipt similar to other TechCash payments you make around campus.

Credit Cards

You can also use your credit card to pay for materials, components, and machine time in the Mobius web app. Your payment will be processed by CyberSource, MIT’s credit card processing partner vendor. You will receive an email receipt directly from CyberSource. Mobius does not store your credit card information.

Information for Shop Managers

When someone pays your shop through Mobius, how funds are transferred depends on the method of payment.

Payments through the TechCash system

For payments made via the TechCash system (regular TechCash payments, and MakerBucks payments), funds are deposited by the TechCash office into the MIT account associated with your TechCash ID. Your TechCash ID is associated with your shop in the shop settings on your shop admin page.

Credit card payments through CyberSource

For payments made by credit card, CyberSource deposits funds into a central MIT Mobius account. Funds are then distributed via internal journal vouchers once a quarter to the MIT account on file for your shop. The MIT account on file for your shop is is associated with your shop on your shop admin page.
