In a makersystem, local makerspaces network together to offer specialized capabilities to a larger community.
We are working hard to make sure MIT students have access to the tools, spaces and information they need to make, create and innovate.
Mobius connects students, faculty and researchers with nearby resources they can use to make, measure and innovate.
Dear Friends of MIT Project Manus,
Greetings from Cambridge!
We last updated you on our work this past summer, and we are happy to provide some new updates on our ever-evolving mission to upgrade campus makerspaces, improve maker training and foster maker communities across MIT.
This fall, Project Manus launched the Make Impact Consortium, the mission of which is to provide tangible resources that speed integration of technology, innovation, making and entrepreneurship within universities and the technology innovation ecosystems that surround them. We hosted three events — two kick-off meetings, a Massachusetts Hub event for interested local schools and three webinars on the purpose of the Make Impact Consortium, the role of Mobius in effectively managing makerspaces, and the role of culture and community in fostering a productive and collaborative academic makerspace. We hope that many of our peer universities will join with us on this mission to make impact.
Have you downloaded the MIT Mobius app yet?

The fourth semester of Project Manus’ and the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship’s Intro to Making course is underway. Intro to Making (2.S973 / 15.351) is a highly-immersive, hands-on introductory course for undergraduate and graduate students which teaches introductory maker skills in 3D printing, CNC machining, CAD, laser cutting, electronics, Arduino, programming and more. Co-taught by Professor Culpepper, Jonathan Hunt, Anthony Ingelido and their Martin Trust colleagues Elaine Chen and Nick Meyers, Intro to Making is an excellent avenue through which interested students from across the Institute can get hands on experience with making.

Since the start of the current academic year, nearly half of the freshman class at MIT took the MakerLodge General Safety Quiz and nearly a quarter of the class passed MakerLodge Tier 1 Checkoffs (an 87% increase over last year), which means that more freshmen than ever are on their ways to becoming empowered makers at MIT! We'll be demoing new trainings this spring.
For all current MIT students and MIT faculty/staff — Mark your calendars for April 17, 2018! Project Manus will be sponsoring the inaugural MIT Maker Break. MIT’s Johnson Ice Rink will be transformed into a celebration of making. MIT students can take a break from studying and join in fun maker-based events. They can show their smart and creative sides while engaging in friendly competition with their fellow students. Or they can come to hang out and cheer on their friends if they don't feel like competing. There is something for everyone! It is designed to be fun and low stress. Follow @mitmakerbreak to stay up to date on developments.
Since our last update, we’ve added three members to the Project Manus team. Maria Prus '10 and Seth Avecilla joined us as Maker Technical Specialists and are developing exciting new maker training modules in 3D printing, rapid prototyping, welding, moldmaking and vacuum forming. Tony Ingelido has joined us as a Maker Consultant and is working on a new entrepreneurial program for freshmen called Founders Lodge as well as helping out with Intro to Making, MakerLodge and ProtoWorks.
Have a great rest of your winter. We look forward to connecting with you soon!
