Quilting Geophysics

Lucy Sandoe's MIT Maker Story

Lucy Sandoe, a PhD student in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at MIT, has created a visually stunning quilt to represent geophysics, her field of study. The quilt is divided into three panels, with each one depicting different aspects of geophysics, and is set to be displayed in Lucy's department and around the Boston area.

Mags

The Chess Playing Robot

Fancy a game of chess? In this video, rising second-year students Keiji Imai, Claudius Tewari, and Eric Zhou describe Mags, the chess-playing robot that they designed and built along with teammate Gloria Zhu, using MIT’s Project Manus makerspaces and resources. Mags features a hidden electromagnet underneath its board that enables movement of chess pieces and a touchscreen that displays the chess board’s configuration.

MIT's Independent Activities Period (IAP) is a four-week period in January during which faculty and students are freed from the rigors of regularly scheduled classes for flexible teaching and learning and for independent study and research. In this video, we follow Charles Yong as he teachers his own IAP course on building an engine and speaks about the power of MIT's maker community.

Cat Arase's MIT Making Story

We follow Project Manus maker mentor Cat Arase as she designs and leads a peer taught course on Lamp Welding and LED Light Making. Cat is a Project Manus Mentor in the Metropolis and The Deep makerspaces.
